What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that spreads through contact with an infected person or contaminated surface.

How does social distancing slow the spread of COVID-19?

Social distancing is the practice of avoiding respiratory droplets caused by coughing, sneezing, or talking from people not in your household or daily routine

Unlike other illnesses such as the cold or the flu, COVID symptoms (like coughing) take many days to start appearing. This means you can’t immediately identify who has the virus and should keep a healthy distance around people you don’t normally interact with (even if they seem fine).

On the other hand, if you have the virus and your symptoms aren’t appearing yet, distancing yourself will decrease the chances of infecting another person.
